Chirripó National Park is located in Talamanca Mountain, 20 Km Northeast from San Isidro del General. This park forms part of La Amistad International Park between Costa Rica and Panama. Chirripó National Park was established on August 19th, 1975. It has an extension of 50150 hectares. The park includes the highest mountain of the Costa Rica, Mount Chirripó with an altitude of 3920 meters.
Chirripó means in indigenous language “Land of Eternal Waters.” The park protects many rivers such as Rio Chirripó Atlántico, Rio Telire, Rio Chirripó Pacífico and the Rio Ceibo.
The weather can change during the day and depends of the altitude. The lowest temperature recorded in Costa Rica was -9 C in the Chirripó Mount. The better season goes from December to May and it is recommended to visit the park in those months.
There are many habitats in the Chirripó National Park as a result of the differences of altitude and climate. There are large trees like oat, sweet cedar and also there are many different types of orchids. The most common species in this zone are coyotes, jaguars, squirrels, frogs, rabbits, and quetzals.
The first person that climbed the Chirripó was the priest Agustin Blessing in 1904. The following expeditions before the park was established were in 1905, 1913, 1915, 1920, 1932 and 1942. Since 1904 many persons have visited the Chirripó and some recommendations are to bring coats and sweaters because the weather can change and is very cold. There are marked trails leading to the peak and the ranger station is open from 5a.m to 2p.m.
