Cross-country race
From the Simple English Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia that anyone can change
A Cross-country race is any running race that takes place on various terrains. Different levels of competition include Middle school (2 miles), high school (5km), collegiate (men 8Km and 10Km, women 5km and 6km), amateur, and professional. The scoring in these events gives one point to the winner, two points to the runner up, and so on. In an invitational or meet where teams score, teams count up the points of their top five finishers. This is their score and the lowest score wins. The sixth and seventh place runners displace other runners in the event, but do not add to the team score. If there is a tie, the team with the fastest sixth man wins.
Times in races depend on the terrain, weather, and competition. This means that two athletes competing in different places in the world running the same time might not be at the same ability level.
