Gandhi is a rock band from Costa Rica. They play music using distorted guitars and rhythm, and percussion that, according to fans, can energize anyone who listens to it.

The members of the group are:

  • Abel Guier, who plays the bass
  • Massimo Hernández, who plays the drums
  • Federico Miranda, who is the guitar player
  • Luis Montalbert-Smith, the piano player and singer.

The lyrics of Gandhi songs are written mainly by Luis.

Montalbert-Smith is a very important part of the group presentations due to his charisma and stage presence. This characteristic makes the shows very interesting and full of adrenaline for his fans.
The band began when Miranda and Montalbert-Smith met in high school. It was in the middle of 90’s. The complete group of four members started playing at universities and local bars. One of the things that made their shows so famous was the diversity of art offered. The fans could not only listen to the music, but also see excellent scenery design, body painting and some performance.
Some of the groups that influenced their repertoire are Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Queen and Soda Stereo. The Gandhi discography includes “En el jardín del corazón” in 1997 (In the garden of the heart), “Páginas perdidas” in 2000 (Lost pages), “BIOS” in 2002 and “Ciclos” in 2004 (Cycles). Also they have a double DVD named “Un ciclo más” made in 2006 (One cycle more).

They have some videos of their songs:

  • Mientras tanto (meanwhile) – Un ciclo más – 2006
  • Una ilusión (An Illusion) – Ciclos – 2004
  • Sr. Caballero (Mr. Gentleman) – Ciclos – 2004
  • Sombras (Shadows) – Ciclos – 2004
  • Ciclos (Cycles) – Ciclos – 2004
  • Comida de animal (Animal food) – BIOS – 2002
  • Procesión (Procession) – BIOS – 2002
  • Hacia adentro (To the inside) – BIOS – 2002
  • El invisible (The invisible) – Páginas Pérdidas – 2000
  • Mátame (Kill me) – Páginas Pérdidas – 2000

The band got the Costa Rican award Album of the year in 2004 due to the success of “Ciclos”. The album “Páginas Pérdidas” got three local prizes in 2000. They have played in Costa Rica but also in Central America, Mexico and the USA.

An important fact for the group is that they were selected to be part of the Tribute to Soda Stereo (Tributo a Soda Stereo). They play a version of “En el sétimo día” (In the seventh day). Also they have opened concerts for many international famous artists.
