Maria Isabel Carvajal was born on January 1888 in San Jose, Costa Rica. She is also known as Carmen Lyra. She was a Costa Rican writer.

She studied at the School in her neighborhood, in the Buenaventura Corrales. She studied pedagogy at the Women College and obtained the teacher’s certification. She realized her professional services in the rural “El Monte” School, in the province of Heredia. Carmen Lyra worked in 1906 in the San Juan de Dios Hospital with religiously but for little time.

She travelled to Europe and learned about new educational systems, when she returned; she worked with a teacher and founded the first preescolar school in Costa Rica.

Her first publication was the novel “En una silla de ruedas” (In a Wheelchair), in 1918. Her short stories were published in the Pandemonium Magazine and Ariel Magazine, also in the “Repertorio Americano”. The stories of Carmen Lyra have been used in more schools, the most popular is “Cuentos de mi tía Panchita” (Story of my aunt Panchita) was published in 1920; this are known by Costa Rican.

The Publisher Costa Rica created in 1975 the Carmen Lyra Literature Award; this Recognition is afforded each 2 years to young writers. Carmen Lyra participated in Costa Rica Politic, she was part of the communist Party in 1931, she created with Luis Gonzáles the Union women workers. Other works of Maria Isabel Carvajal are “Las fantasias de Juan Silvestre” (1918), “Obras Completas” (1975), “La cucarachita mandina” (1976), “relatos escogidos” (1977). Carmen Lyra was not only a great writer and teacher; she was a woman of excellent ideas policies, contributing to pro-social causes.

She died in the capital of Mexico in 1949, her 61 years.
