The President of the Republic of China (Taiwan) (Traditional Chinese: 中華民國總統; Hanyu Pinyin: Zhōnghuá Mínguó Zǒngtǒng; Tongyong Pinyin: JhōngHuá MínGuó JǒngTǒng; Wade-Giles: Chung-Hua Min-Kuo Tsung-T'ung) is the head of state and commander in chief of the democratic island country known officially as the Republic of China (Taiwan). The Republic of China (Taiwan) government has controlled Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen, Matsu and other islands after the rest of mainland China since 1949.
The presidential office was created in 1948 under the 1947 Constitution of the Republic of China (Taiwan).
Outside of Taiwan, the President of the Republic of China (Taiwan) is usually informally referred to as the "President of Taiwan" (Traditional Chinese: 臺灣總統). In the previous Kuomintang-controlled administration, the title of "President of the Republic of China" was used. The current Democratic Progressive Party administration refers to the President as the "President of the Republic of China (Taiwan)" (Traditional Chinese: 中華民國(臺灣)總統).
