Ritchies is the largest independent supermarket group in the IGA network. It was started in 1870 by Thomas Ritchie who opened a food store in the tiny country village of Frankston.

It is almost 138 years old. With a long and successful heritage, it claims the title of Australia's largest independent supermarket and liquor group which workers have put money in.

The "shilling for every pound" formula has been translated into the Community Benefit scheme. Ritchies now donates many millions of dollars each year to many places as chosen by shoppers. The focus is on the community, which is why the group uses the tagline "Ritchies - where the community benefits".

[change] Formula

The formula of Ritchies has remained the same since the first food shop opened in 1870. The formula was and still is as follows:

    • Keeping the group of shops competitive
    • Rewarding staff for their efforts
    • Donating part of the profit back to the community

[change] Fast Facts

    • Ritchies is also an independent supermarket group which makes money and has more buying power jointly with other independent food store groups across Australia.
    • Ritchies is known as Australia's fastest growing independent supermarket and in doing this it has now spread the 'Community Spirit' to more then 52 Stores along the East Coast.
    • Ritchies remains independent and is now part of the Supa IGA supermarket brand. The good sense in working with other food store groups as a team expands the offers to customers across Australia.
