Wikipedia:Template messages

From the Simple English Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia that anyone can change

This page is a guideline on Wikipedia. Many editors agree with acting this way. It is a good idea to follow it, but it is not policy. Feel free to change the page as needed, but please use the talk page to suggest any big changes.

Templates are used within pages to provide the same message over and over again. Changes to the look, wording, or style of the message can be done quickly, because templates are made again for the reader when the article loads.

In other words, when the message is changed, you do not need to update a page that uses it if you use a template. Standard notices that might be on a page for months or forever should be "transcluded" for easy updating. This loads the current version of the message and puts it on the page every time you load it.

For any of these messages, you can include "subst:" (as in {{subst:1911}} ) when inserting them to put the full text into the page. Doing this means that any future changes to the template will not be shown in that article, but it can be useful sometimes.

To make a new custom message, start a page in the Template namespace. The title should be "Template:", then the name of your message. The page should then be written with the text of your message. Add your new template to this list.

Image:Info-pictogram.png This address is shared by many users

This IP address, Template messages, is shared by many users. This means that messages left here may reach the wrong person. Be careful when blocking this IP or reverting contributions without checking them first.

If you are using this address and haven't registered, you can create an account to stop receiving comments meant for other users.

{{SchoolIP}}
(talk)

School IP address Attention:

This IP address, Template messages, belongs to a school and may be shared by many users. In the case of schools using proxy servers, this IP address may in fact represent many users at many different computers.

Because of this, a message meant for one person may be gotten by another and a block will be shared by many people. If you are editing from this address and are getting messages because of other people, you can avoid them by creating an account for yourself. In some cases you may not be able to create an account for a while because of people trying to fight vandalism.

Caution should be used when blocking this IP or reverting its contributions without checking - if a block is needed, administrators should consider a soft block.

Note: In the event of on going vandalism, anonymous editing from this IP address may not be allowed for up to 6 months at a time while abuse reports may be sent to your school administration for investigation in cases of long-term abuse by registered users.
