The Sims is the third best selling computer and video game of all time[1] (it mostly sold well on the computer).

It was created by Will Wright, of Maxis and EA Games. It was first released in February 2000. His intention was to make it a game without an objective. This feature was the reason why it attracted so many gamers.

[change] Expanding the Game

By mid-2004, the game was so popular that add-on games were released, known as 'Expansion Packs'. The full list of expansion packs released is listed below, in chronological order:

  1. The Sims Livin' Large - August 2000 (the Sims can have a more comfortable life)
  2. The Sims House Party - March 2001 (The Sims can start parties)
  3. The Sims Hot Date - November 2001 (The sims can have romantic dates)
  4. The Sims Vacation - March 2002 (The sims can go and have a lovely vacation)
  5. The Sims Unleashed - September 2002 (The Sims can have pets to take care for)
  6. The Sims Superstar - May 2003 (The Sims can become some superstars)
  7. The Sims Makin' Magic - October 2003 (The sims can make magic things and scare their friends)

There has only been one main follow-up to The Sims - The Sims 2.

Featuring a 360 degree rotational view, aspirations and aging, it fixes all the 'minor problems' in The Sims 1.

[change] Gameplay

The first part of the game is to make a family. This can be of children and adults. A player can choose what they look like from many different clothes and hair styles. The family must include at least one adult.

The game then lets the player move a family into a house or an empty space to build a house. Every family has a budget of $20,000 to start off with.

There are many different floor coverings, wall coverings and doors to choose from when building a house. After building, the player can add items.

When a player is in 'Live Mode', he control a "Sim", which is a person. He has to do things like he would do in real life such as cleaning, going to the bathroom, eating and washing. A Sim also has to get a job to get more money (known as Simoleans in the game).

After it sold well on the computer it was put on other platforms like the PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, GameCube and Xbox. The console releases are:

  1. The Sims
  2. The Sims Bustin' Out
  3. The Urbz: Sims in the City
  4. The Sims 2


These all follow a different concept. They are more objective-based rather than free-willed. They have not been as popular as the original PC editions.
