Michelle Kwan (born July 7, 1980) is an American figure skater. She has won five world championships and nine U.S. championships.

[change] Birth and childhood
She was born in Torrance, California. She was named after the Beatles song Michelle. She began figure skating when she was five years old. When she was 12 years old, she passed a test so that she could compete against adults. She grew up with one older brother, Ron, and one older sister, Karen.

Kwan won the world junior championship in 1994. The same year, at the age of 13, she came in the top 10 in the world senior championship. She became world champion in 1996, when she was 15.
